Novel aspects in pain integration and modulation

Pain is a major issue in human health management. It is defined as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience. Potential harmful environmental insults and tissue damages are detected in periphery by specialized primary sensory neurons named nociceptors and transmitted to the central nervous system. In the CNS, ascending pathways convey this information to the somatosensory cortex and areas of the brain associated attention, emotion, and autonomic functions. All along these pathways, nociceptive information are integrated by neuronal networks and subject to modulation.

The aim of this symposium is to bring together international experts working on novel aspects of integration of nociceptive information and modulation of pain. New knowledge and concepts in (1) altered sensory processing and plasticity that occurs in pathological pain conditions and (2) emotional, affective and cognitive modulations leading to an altered perception of pain, will be discussed during this symposium.
